Categorize bank transactions
Change transaction categories and understand suggested and learned categories.
Banking shows a category for each transaction in the transaction list and detail.
Change the category of a transaction
- Open Banking and find the transaction.
- Press its category, Add a category, or the transaction itself. The transaction detail opens.
- In Category, choose the category that describes the payment. Outgoing and incoming payments have different categories.
- Press Save.
Clients and accountants can both change categories. On desktop, the Category column is immediately before the Document column. On mobile, each transaction shows its category below the document status.
Where categories come from
Numonis proposes a category for each new transaction:
- Learned from you: a person chose a category for an earlier transaction from the same counterparty, in the same direction.
- Suggested: the bank labels or the automatic review identify the purpose of the payment.
If the bank information does not show what the payment is for, the transaction stays uncategorized and shows Add a category. A category that you choose is never replaced by a suggestion. Choose Uncategorized to keep a transaction blank: Numonis then does not suggest a category for it again.
Numonis remembers the latest category that a person chose for each counterparty in your organization. When you choose a different category for that counterparty later, the new choice applies to the next transactions. Transactions that already have a category do not change. If a supplier sells different kinds of goods or services, check its transactions. A category does not mark an invoice as paid and does not link a document.
Examples of outgoing categories are Food & groceries, Software & SaaS, Payroll & salaries, VAT, Taxes, Bank fees and Internal transfer. Examples of incoming categories are Sales, Shareholder loan, VAT refunds and Interest & cashback. Transactions categorized before the current list keep their category, for example Subscriptions or Travel. You can keep it or change it to a category from the list.
